Gwacheon’s Park Geun-jung ‘leaps to victory’ in women’s high jump… Gold for a new team
Gwacheon City Government’s Park Geun-jung won her first gold medal of the season in the women’s high jump at the 2023 KTFL National Unemployment Athletics Games in Yecheon, giving her new team its first victory.
Park, who joined Gwacheon City Hall this year under head coach Park Sang-moon, cleared 1.70 meters in the second round of the women’s high jump on the final day of competition at Yecheon Stadium in North Gyeongsangbuk-do on Friday to win by a comfortable margin over Jang Sun-young (Cheongyang County Office, Chungcheongnam-do – 1.65 meters) and Handa Yae (Hwaseong City Hall – 1.50 meters).
It was Park’s first gold medal of the season, avenging his runner-up finish at the KTFL National Unemployed Athletics Championships in Iksan in March. He also won a silver medal in the triple jump, his first event, the day before, in a perfect performance that included one gold and one silver.
“(Park) Geun-jung was runner-up at the last Iksan Job Fair and did not compete at the KBS Boat Competition due to COVID-19, but she has been steadily improving her condition with the goal of the national championships in October,” said Gwacheon City Hall coach Park Sang-moon. “If she continues to improve her performance at this rate, she will be able to break her personal best of 1.79 meters at the national championships and have a shot at gold.”
