LG right-handed sidearm pitcher Jeong Woo-young (24) of professional baseball was selected as one of the 30 finalists for the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) announced on the 4th. He fulfilled his longed-for dream of being on the senior national team for the first time in his life.
Jung Woo-young said, “I have to get good grades, but I think the process will be of great help to me. If you do well, isn’t it good for our Republic of Korea?” he said. “I want to pitch often. You can send it to the previous game. I will dedicate myself to the country,” he said, raising his voice.
Since 2019, his debut season, he has been consistently active as the main axis of Pilseung Group. However, he had no contact with the Taegeuk mark. He raised his chances on his own last year. He showed a 2.64 earned run average with 2 wins, 3 losses and 35 holds in 58 innings in 67 games in the regular season. For the first time in his life, he won the KBO League Hold King title. Along with Ko Young-pyo (KT), he was named as the only sidearm pitcher on the WBC national team.
Jung Woo-young said, “I didn’t think it would be natural. Still, I was the title holder last year, so I was looking forward to it on the other hand,” he said. This time, he calmly promised, ‘If it doesn’t work out, let’s not be disappointed’.”
You will be wearing the national team uniform soon. “It is the moment I have been dreaming of,” he said. He smiled brightly, saying, “I really wanted it after joining the pros and had many opportunities, but I was eliminated.” “I am looking forward to competing with top-class players. I want to see the American players, but first of all, the Korea-Japan match is important, so I want to meet the Japanese players first.”
I received the WBC official ball last month. Jung Woo-young said, “Currently, I am playing catch with that ball. The ball is very slippery, but it was good,” he said. “The most important thing is to show my ball, which I have been throwing. Then I think you will get a good evaluation. So far, the preparations are going well.”
There are also specific goals. Jung Woo-young said, “I was envious of how the whole nation loved soccer during the World Cup in Qatar (which ended last month). I thought it would be nice if you would be enthusiastic about baseball as well,” he said with strength.
Korea will play the first round of the full league in Tokyo, Japan from March 9 to 13. In Group B, Australia, Japan, Czech Republic and China face off in turn. The top two teams advance to the second round (quarterfinals) to be held in Tokyo on March 15-16. The national team will convene on February 14 in Arizona, USA.
