Toward ‘Sun Dong-yeol-Ryu Hyun-jin-Yoon Seok-min’… Sluggishly Washed Pedi Aims for 3 Crowns

Only three players in history have accomplished the feat.

Baseball’s NC hit of the year is arguably the new “outsider ace,” Eric Pedroia, 30. The 30-year-old has completely filled the void left by Drew Ruchinski, who anchored the NC starting rotation for the past four years. He blew up the KBO League with his skills and became the pitcher every team feared.

Until July, he was playing beautifully. In 17 games, he went 14-2 with a 1.74 ERA (20 earned runs in 103⅓ innings) and 121 strikeouts. He had 12 quality starts (6+ innings, 3 earned runs or less) and 4 quality plus starts (7+ innings, 3 earned runs or less). It was a streak of flawless pitching, never giving up more than three runs.

Then came the August I’d rather forget. The big run games happened. It started with five runs in four innings against Lotte on August 2. It was the lowest innings of the season and the most runs allowed. He soon recovered and seemed to find his groove, but on August 31, he had a nightmare with seven runs in three innings against KIA in Gwangju. This left him with an awkward monthly record of 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA.

Shaky but not broken. In his first start of September, he threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Changwon Kiwoom on the 5th. Facing 25 batters and striking out 11, 메이저놀이터

Individually, he’s on the rise again. He finished the season with 17 wins (6 losses) and a 2.28 ERA (36 earned runs in 142⅓ innings pitched), solidifying his first-place ranking in each category. He also struck out 160 batters, trailing only Ahn Woo-jin (Kiwoom-164). With Ahn out for the season due to elbow ligament reconstruction (Tommy John) surgery, it’s only a matter of time before she takes the top spot in strikeouts.

The chances of a pitcher winning the Triple Crown of wins, ERA, and strikeouts increase. Only three pitchers in history have accomplished this feat. “Legend” Sun Dong-yeol won the Triple Crown four times: 1986, 1989, 1990, and 1991. “Monster” Ryu Hyun-jin followed in 2006, when he made his professional debut, and the last man standing, Yoon Seok-min, completed the feat in 2011. Peddie is looking to break the 12-year drought.

There’s more. The ’20+ wins and 1-run ERA’ record is still within reach. Only four players have done it: Park Chul-soon (1982), Choi Dong-won (1985), Sun Dong-yeol (1986-1989-1990), and Kim Hyun-wook (1997). None of these precedents were written by pure selection. Pedi will attempt to be the first.
